Did you know that Earth Day is the world’s most significant environmental movement?
The first celebration was in 1970, and has since gained momentum and impact worldwide. The idea came from U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin after witnessing the effects of a massive oil spill in 1969 in Santa Barbara. On April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate a healthy, sustainable environment in massive coast-to-coast rallies. Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests against the deterioration of the domain. Groups that had been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife suddenly realized they shared common values.
From poisoning and injuring marine life to disrupting human hormones, from littering our beaches and landscapes to clogging our waste streams and landfills, the exponential growth of plastics is now threatening the survival of our planet.
In response, Earth Day 2018 will focus on fundamentally changing human attitudes and behavior about plastics and catalyzing a significant reduction in plastic pollution.
