Deadly Problem With Our Water That They’re Not Talking About
As we have discussed before, the lead crisis has been gaining nationwide attention and is a serious public safety problem. Since the headlining Flint water crisis, nationwide attention has been brought to water quality and the issues that may arise if water does not meet health standards. Believe it or not, but Flint, Michigan has now encountered a whole new problem with their water. In a recent report by the Huffington Post, experts are saying there may be a deadly contaminant effecting local Flint residents.
A severe, often lethal form of pneumonia called Legionnaires’ Disease has taken the lives of 12 people within the area of Flint after switching their source of drinking water to the Flint River. Legionnaires’ is caused by a bacteria natural to rivers, lakes and streams. Between 2014-2015 there were a total of 91 cases in Genesse County which is over 7 times the typical average.
Over the past 15 years, the number diagnosed Legionnaires’ cases nationwide have added up to 5,000. There are other estimates out there as well though who have thought the number is up to 18,000.
What Do We Know About Legionnaires Disease?
- It’s caused by breathing or aspirating mist or water droplets which have the Legionella bacteria.
- 10% of cases are fatal.
- The bacteria which causes the disease builds up over time within water distribution systems or places where water might sit stagnant for extended periods of time; for example large plumbing systems, mist machines, humidifiers, hot tubs, shower heads, spas, cooling towers, and decorative fountains.
- Once the bacteria has colonized within the water distribution system, it’s extremely hard to get rid of.
- People with weaker immune systems, who are usually 50 or older are at a greater risk of contracting the disease. Other people at risk include current or former smokers.
